We publish our prices and give the profit back
OpenLMS is a Hong Kong open-source learning systems practice. We build and run Learning Management Systems and Training Management Systems for enterprises and schools on 100% open-source technology, we publish every price, and we put our margin back into the platform rather than into a shareholder.
Key facts
- Who we are
- A Hong Kong open-source learning systems practice building and running LMS and TMS platforms for enterprises and schools.
- Commercial model
- The platform is free for everyone. Hosted subscription is HK$30 per user per year, on-premise installation HK$30,000, customisation HK$1,500 per man-day. All published.
- Where the profit goes
- Into building more open-source software — the Drupal LMS platform, the modules, the documentation and the translations Hong Kong organisations need.
- Built on
- Drupal LMS, forked from Opigno, rewritten for Drupal 10.3+ and Drupal 11.
- Coverage
- English, Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong) and Simplified Chinese, as a first-class product requirement.
- Principle
- We will not recommend open source to an organisation that cannot run it.
What we believe
Software should not be a per-seat tax
Training infrastructure should be an asset you own, not an annuity you pay. Open source is the only structure that reliably delivers that.
A price you cannot see is a price you cannot check
If a vendor will not publish what something costs, you cannot compare it, and you cannot budget it. So we publish ours — every number, the same for every customer, with no "contact us for pricing" behind it.
Localisation is engineering, not translation
Hong Kong schools and HR teams do not need an English product with Chinese strings bolted on. Terminology, workflow and interface need to be designed for 繁體中文(香港)first.
Content is where learning actually happens
The platform is table stakes. If the courseware is weak, the LMS is an expensive file cabinet. That is why we do content as seriously as software.
Profit with a destination is better than profit without one
Our margin from installation and customisation work funds engineering on the platform everyone runs. It is not a donation to a foundation with a website — it is the same engineers improving the same code you are running.
Tell people when we are wrong
Open source is not always the right answer, and a platform demo should include where our product is the weaker option. We would rather lose a deal than win a bad deployment.
How we work
What we bring
- Open-source LMS and TMS implementation
- Trilingual courseware design and production
- HRIS, SSO and workflow integration
- Learning content architecture and assessment design
- Examination and assessment delivery design
- On-premise and private cloud deployment
What we ask of you
Good deployments are collaborative. The things that most affect the outcome are not technical.
- A named owner on your side
- Real examples of your current process
- Honesty about internal technical capacity
- Access to the people who do the work
- Agreement on who maintains what afterwards
Questions about who we are
Are you a reseller of any commercial LMS?
No. We do not resell, resell-adjacent sell or offer support contracts for any commercial LMS product, including the major Hong Kong ones. We implement and run open-source platforms, and we will happily tell you when a commercial licence is genuinely the better economic choice for an organisation of your size.
Where is OpenLMS based and who do you work with?
We are a Hong Kong practice, and we work with organisations across Hong Kong — corporate HR and L&D teams, school administrators, teachers and course providers. We work in English, Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong) and Simplified Chinese, and we reply in the working language you write in.
How do you make money if the platform licence is free?
From custom courseware development and from implementation work. Both are needed regardless of which platform you own, which is why we can quote them competitively. It also means our incentive sits in the quality of the learning your people actually get, not in how many seats you open.
Do you guarantee the platform will work for us?
No vendor should, and we do not. What we do is scope it honestly: we tell you which of your requirements are covered by the platform as it stands, which need configuration, and which need custom development. If a requirement is a poor fit, we say so before you sign anything.
What is your position on proprietary export formats and lock-in?
Data stays in a standard relational schema and exports in standard formats — SQL, YAML, SCORM. The code is GPL open source. There is no proprietary data format to negotiate on the way out and no export fee, because there is nothing proprietary holding it in the first place.
